Topic: Teaching During COVID-19 Trauma Presenter: Shana McCarron, EDSI Consultant Have you had any of these thoughts over the last few weeks: Why is it so hard to stay focused? Why am I feeling so distracted? Why is it hard to get to sleep or stay asleep, or conversely, Why am I so tired all the time despite sleeping more? The outbreak and mitigation efforts of coronavirus (COVID-19) have been incredibly challenging, stressful, and traumatic for everyone. As teachers, many of us had to quickly pivot to embrace remote and distance learning in ways we did not expect or necessarily plan for to best support our students. As we do this, it is crucial to understand our own reactions to the stress and collective traumatic response to our “new normal." This presentation will explore some common responses to these rapidly changing circumstances and ways we can develop healthy coping strategies. We will also discuss embracing technological tools to continue to offer students the best possible educational experience despite the significant challenges we are facing.
