AALPD Webinar: Instructional Routines for Numeracy Instruction - January 24 at 12:00 PM Eastern Time12/22/2021 Teachers in adult literacy are often familiar with instructional routines in reading and language instruction, such as KWL charts or pair/shares, but may not know that there are many instructional routines used effectively in numeracy instruction to engage students and increase learning opportunities. In this session, we will experience a numeracy instructional routine as learners, then explore other instructional routines that the Adult Numeracy Network (ANN) has curated for the field. We will also look at the other resources ANN provides for its members. Cynthia and Eric from ANN are presenting to AALPD in hopes that many of our members will make active use of the resources provided by both organizations.
About the Presenters: Cynthia Bell is the Director of Numeracy & Workforce Development Services at the Literacy Assistance Center, where she oversees workforce projects and initiatives and develops and facilitates workshops for adult basic education (ABE) and high school equivalency (HSE) instructors. When she is not leading and developing trainings, Cynthia is providing customized coaching to instructors on integrated curriculum design, blending workforce and academic instruction, and best practices for teaching and learning mathematics. In 2016, she co-authored the teacher resource book Teaching Adults: A HiSET Exam Resource Book. Cynthia has presented at international, national, state, and regional conferences, and is an active board member of the Adult Numeracy Network (ANN) and the National Coalition for Literacy (NCL), an affiliate delegate of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), and a national LINCS numeracy trainer. Eric Appleton is a math professional developer for the City University of New York (CUNY) Adult Literacy Program. Before coming to CUNY, he taught in an education program for formerly incarcerated people. Along with Mark Trushkowsky, he is the co-author of the Fast Track GRASP Math Packets, funded by the New York State Education Department. Eric is a founding member of the Community of Adult Math Instructors (CAMI), which meets monthly to do math and talk about teaching. Eric is currently president of the board for the Adult Numeracy Network (ANN). Click here for meeting information. The presentation will last approximately 30 minutes, with time for questions. The monthly board meeting will follow the webinar. We hope you can join us!
