AALPD advocates for increased funding for professional development that supports the participation of adult education practitioners in professional development, which will help them be effective teachers, tutors, counselors, and administrators.

In 2005, AALPD shared sixteen policy statements that support professional development for adult education practitioners at national, state and local levels:
AALPD supports the Educate and Elevate Campaign to advocate for full funding to meet all the objectives of the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA). Educate and Elevate is a joint effort of various adult literacy and education organizations and is spearheaded by COABE and the National Association of State Directors of Adult Education (NASDAE).

AALPD is a member organization of the National Coalition for Literacy.​
